Plateau Governor Mutfwang May Join APC Amid Party Crisis

Fresh political realignments may be underway in Plateau State as Governor Caleb Mutfwang is reportedly preparing to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). A senior government official, who spoke under condition of anonymity, confirmed the planned defection, stating that talks with APC leaders are already at an advanced stage.

The move, according to the source, is being driven by strategic political interests ahead of the 2027 general elections. Governor Mutfwang, who came into office under the PDP platform, is said to be dissatisfied with the internal crises rocking the party at both state and national levels. The source noted that the governor believes aligning with the APC will provide a more stable platform to deliver on his administration’s agenda and secure political survival in the coming years.

Though the governor has yet to make a public statement, his recent political body language and meetings with prominent APC figures have further fueled speculation. His defection, if confirmed, will significantly alter the political landscape of the state, potentially weakening the PDP’s influence and boosting the ruling party’s control in the North-Central region.

Reactions have started to trail the rumoured move. While PDP loyalists urge him to stay and fix the party from within, some APC stakeholders have welcomed the idea, describing it as a major win for their party. Political observers believe Mutfwang’s defection could trigger similar moves by other influential figures in the PDP.
