Four Killed in Kogi Road Crash Involving Bus and Stationary Truck

At least four people have been confirmed dead in a tragic road accident that occurred along the Lokoja-Abuja highway in Kogi State when an 18-seater commercial bus crashed into a stationary truck.

The accident, which happened in the early hours of Monday near Obajana, involved a Toyota Hiace bus traveling from Ibadan and a broken-down truck reportedly left without warning signs. Eyewitnesses said the bus, fully loaded with passengers, rammed into the rear of the parked truck while trying to overtake another vehicle.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) quickly arrived at the scene to evacuate victims and restore traffic flow. According to the Kogi State Sector Commander, Stephen Dawulung, a total of 18 persons were involved in the crash — 11 males and 7 females.

“Four persons lost their lives instantly — two men and two women. Several others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment,” Dawulung said.

He attributed the accident to speeding and lack of caution by the bus driver, as well as failure by the truck driver to provide adequate warning signs after breaking down. He stressed the need for drivers to exercise patience and observe safety rules, especially at night or early in the morning.

The corps urged transport operators to properly maintain their vehicles and avoid reckless driving, warning that most road crashes are avoidable if traffic laws are followed. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
