CSOs Accuse National Assembly of Meddling in Jamb , WAEC Affairs

Civil society organisations (CSOs) have criticised the National Assembly over what they describe as undue interference in the operations of examination bodies such as the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

The CSOs, under the aegis of the Coalition for Education Reform and Transparency (CERT), voiced their concerns during a press briefing in Abuja. They accused lawmakers of attempting to politicise the education sector through excessive oversight and proposals that could undermine the autonomy and efficiency of these institutions.

Speaking at the event, CERT coordinator Amina Yusuf said that while legislative oversight is important, it must not cross the line into micromanagement. She noted that JAMB and WAEC have made significant progress in enhancing transparency, integrity, and efficiency in examination processes, especially through the adoption of technology.

Yusuf condemned recent calls by some legislators to alter admission timelines and exam schedules, describing such moves as disruptive. “We fear that political interference in JAMB or WAEC’s operations could erode public trust and reverse the reforms that have improved service delivery,” she stated.

The group urged the National Assembly to focus on policies that strengthen institutional capacity and address systemic challenges rather than interfering in technical operations.

Other speakers also highlighted the need for collaboration rather than confrontation, suggesting that the government engage education stakeholders through dialogue.

The CSOs concluded by warning that continued interference could harm students’ futures and damage the credibility of Nigeria’s education system.
