The Senate has directed an investigation into widespread rumours concerning the health of Senate President Godswill Akpabio. This comes amid growing speculation on social media and online platforms claiming that Akpabio is unwell and receiving medical attention abroad.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Senate condemned the circulation of what it described as false and malicious information, calling it a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and destabilise the leadership of the National Assembly.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Yemi Adaramodu, said the Senate views the development with seriousness and has asked relevant security and intelligence agencies to trace the source of the rumours and bring those responsible to book.
He noted that Senator Akpabio remains healthy and has been actively carrying out his official duties without interruption. “The Senate President is not sick. He is hale, hearty, and discharging his responsibilities with full capacity,” Adaramodu said.
The Senate warned against using social media as a tool for political propaganda or personal attacks, especially without credible evidence. Lawmakers urged the public to disregard the reports and rely only on verified information from official channels.
This move reflects the Senate’s stance on protecting its leadership from what it called coordinated misinformation campaigns. The probe is expected to help restore public confidence and hold those behind the false reports accountable.
The Senate reiterated its commitment to transparency and maintaining the dignity of its institution while assuring Nigerians that the leadership remains stable and focused.
