The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has cautioned politicians and interest groups against orchestrating smear campaigns aimed at discrediting the agency and its chairman, Ola Olukoyede, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale revealed that certain individuals with vested interests in suspects under investigation or prosecution have recruited paid agents to launch media attacks against the commission. These attacks allege political bias in the EFCC’s operations, aiming to intimidate the agency and hinder its anti-corruption efforts.
Oyewale emphasized that the EFCC remains committed to its mandate of promoting public accountability and will not be deterred by such tactics. He stated, “The commission will not tolerate any attempt to distract it from the patriotic task of improving public accountability in Nigeria. It reiterates its non-political stance in all its activities.”
He further noted that the commission is closely monitoring those involved in these discrediting efforts and warned that any political actor, regardless of party affiliation, with corruption allegations will not evade scrutiny. Oyewale asserted that the EFCC operates independently and does not align with any political party, reaffirming its commitment to justice without fear or favor.
The EFCC’s warning comes as the political climate intensifies in the lead-up to the 2027 elections, with the agency urging all stakeholders to refrain from actions that could undermine its integrity and the broader fight against corruption.
