28 Students Expelled as UniAbuja Moves Against Drug Abuse, Indiscipline

The Senate of University of Abuja, now known as Yakubu Gowon University, has approved the expulsion of 28 students for offences ranging from examination malpractice to drug possession and other forms of misconduct.

The decision was reached at the institution’s 191st regular Senate meeting after consideration of a report by the Student Disciplinary Committee, according to a statement issued Sunday by the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Habib Yakoob.

The university said the affected students were found guilty of offences including assault, conspiracy, burglary, theft, falsification of O’Level results submitted for admission, and possession and use of hard drugs.

The Senate also approved the withdrawal of certificates previously issued to 15 former students who failed to honor repeated invitations from the disciplinary committee.

In addition, nine students were cleared of wrongdoing, while 33 others received warnings for offences such as hostel racketeering, conspiracy and fighting.

Vice-Chancellor Hakeem Fawehinmi said the university would not compromise its academic standards or tolerate actions that undermine integrity and campus safety.

“The academic integrity of the university is sacrosanct, and we are determined that anyone who violates it will be appropriately sanctioned,” he said.

Fawehinmi added that the institution remains committed to maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment while strengthening student engagement, counseling and orientation programs to promote responsible conduct.
