300-level student kills self after losing house rent to gambling

A 300-level student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, has died by suicide after allegedly losing money meant for house rent to gambling, students and union officials said.

The student, Kelvin Danlami, was a Computer Science undergraduate at the institution in Niger State. He was reported to have taken his life on Monday after mismanaging funds entrusted to him for rent, according to fellow students.

Musa Abdullahi, a university student who posted a condolence message, described the death as a tragic loss and cautioned young people against the lure of quick money through gambling.

“We lost a promising 300-level Computer Science student after he mismanaged house rent money due to gambling,” Abdullahi said. “Young people should stay away from anything that promises quick money through the wrong means.”

The Students’ Union Government of the university also confirmed the death in a statement signed by its General Secretary, Aliyu Abubakar. The union said it received the news “with deep sorrow” and extended condolences to the family, friends, the Department of Computer Science and the wider university community.

Danlami’s death, the statement said, was “a tragic and irreplaceable loss” to the institution, adding prayers for comfort and strength for his family and colleagues.
