Court jails woman 45 years for trafficking minor

A Federal High Court in Abeokuta has sentenced a 29-year-old woman to 45 years in prison for trafficking a minor to the Republic of Benin for sexual exploitation.

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) said the convict, Eniola Boluwatife Adedeji, was found guilty on nine of 10 counts related to human trafficking offenses.

In a statement issued Monday, Ogun State NAPTIP Commander Bose Jimoh said the court convicted Adedeji on counts one through eight and count 10, while acquitting her on count nine.

According to the agency, Adedeji was arrested on Aug. 18, 2024, by officers of the Nigeria Police Force in the Adigbe area of Abeokuta, Ogun State. She was arraigned before the Federal High Court on Sept. 24, 2024.

The trial began on March 12, 2025, and judgment was delivered on June 5, 2026.

NAPTIP said the court sentenced the defendant to five years’ imprisonment on each of the nine counts for which she was convicted, with all sentences ordered to run concurrently.

The offenses were committed under various provisions of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015.

The agency said the victim, whose identity was withheld, was trafficked to Cotonou in neighboring Benin Republic for sexual exploitation.

The conviction comes weeks after another trafficking case in Ogun State in which a 27-year-old man, Chukwuemeka Iheamama, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for trafficking two minors for exploitation.

The victims in that case were identified as Bright Edim, 15, and Mary Ekong, 15.

According to NAPTIP, Iheamama was convicted on a three-count charge of child trafficking and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and a 250,000-naira fine on the first count, five years’ imprisonment and a 500,000-naira fine on the second count, and five years’ imprisonment on the third count, with the sentences ordered to run concurrently.
