Anambra police have secured a court order remanding a couple accused of abusing a 10-year-old boy in a correctional facility pending further proceedings.
The suspects, identified as 40-year-old Chukwudi Chukwuyere and his wife, 30-year-old Chisom Chukwuyere, were arraigned after police concluded preliminary investigations into the alleged abuse of the boy, Chiziterem, in Awada, Obosi, in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The case drew widespread attention after a video showing the child with severe burns and injuries across his body circulated on social media, prompting intervention by the Anambra State Government. The boy is receiving medical treatment under state protection.
In a statement issued Thursday, Anambra Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga said the suspects were remanded after being charged in court.
“The suspects were arraigned in court following the conclusion of preliminary investigations into the case, which attracted public concern after reports and video footage of the victim surfaced on social media,” Ikenga said.
He commended residents for providing timely information that led to the child’s rescue, medical treatment and the arrest of the suspects.
“The Anambra State Police Command remains committed to promoting justice and the protection of human rights in line with the vision of the Inspector General of Police. Further developments will be communicated accordingly,” he added.
On Wednesday, Anambra State First Lady Nonye Soludo said the boy was making steady progress after visiting him for a second time at the hospital.
She described his recovery as a testament to the dedication of the medical team and the support and prayers of well-wishers. According to Soludo, doctors confirmed that the child’s condition is stable, and she expressed satisfaction with his continued improvement while commending the medical personnel caring for him.
