Abductions: US demands action, FG vows to track bandits

The United States has urged Nigeria to take decisive action against the surge in abductions across the country, as the federal government vowed to intensify efforts to track and dismantle bandit networks.

A spokesperson for the United States Government said Washington is deeply concerned by the rising number of kidnappings, particularly in northern Nigeria, and called for stronger protection of civilians and accountability for perpetrators.

In response, the Federal Government of Nigeria said security agencies have been directed to step up intelligence gathering and coordinated operations to locate bandit camps and rescue victims.

Officials said the government is deploying additional resources and working with state authorities to curb criminal activities, including mass kidnappings targeting students, travelers and rural communities.

Nigeria has struggled for years with banditry and kidnappings for ransom, which have disrupted daily life and strained security forces. Authorities say ongoing military and police operations are yielding results, but acknowledged that sustained efforts are needed to end the violence.

Both governments emphasized the need for continued cooperation and support to address the security challenge and restore public confidence.
