A gatekeeper at Dominion School in Aba, Abia State, has been taken into police custody over the alleged sexual assault of a 3-year-old pupil, authorities said.
The suspect, whose name was not released, appeared in a video circulated Saturday on a YouTube channel identified as @ChuksErike, in which he appeared to admit involvement in the incident.
In the video, viewed by Nigerian Mirror on Tuesday evening, the man was heard saying, “I will not do it again,” and claimed the act occurred “only once” when asked how many times it happened. He also alleged that the incident occurred after the child asked to use the toilet and that he lured her away before committing the act.
Abia State Police Public Relations Officer Maureen Chinaka confirmed Monday that the case is under investigation.
“The case is currently under investigation and has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department,” Chinaka said.
The incident has raised renewed concerns about the safety of children in school environments, as reports of sexual abuse involving minors persist despite the adoption of child protection and criminal laws in several states.
Gender rights advocates have called for stricter enforcement of existing laws and stronger measures to protect children, particularly girls, from abuse.
