The 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony in Abuja took on added significance on Thursday as the absence of key political figures raised questions about leadership accountability.
President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, were both missing from the national wreath-laying event at the Cenotaph of the Unknown Soldier in Eagle Square. The annual ceremony honors officers and personnel of the Armed Forces who have died defending the country, as well as the sacrifices of serving members, veterans, and their families.
Minister of State for the FCT, Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure, arrived late, coinciding with the arrival of Vice President Kashim Shettima. Protocol officials initially denied her access to the saluting dais during the general salute, though she later joined dignitaries in laying wreaths alongside the Vice President.
Several top officials participated in the wreath-laying, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio; Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, represented by Deputy Benjamin Kalu; Chief Justice of Nigeria Kudirat Kekere-Ekun; Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru; Chief of Defence Staff Christopher Musa; service chiefs; senior military officers; members of the diplomatic corps; and Grace Morenike Henry, chairman of the Nigerian Legion.
No official explanation was provided for Wike’s absence from the high-profile national ceremony. The absence of the President and FCT Minister, however, drew attention to the broader issue of leadership visibility and responsibility during national commemorations.
