Nigeria captain Wilfred Ndidi will miss the Super Eagles’ crucial Africa Cup of Nations semifinal clash against Morocco due to injury, team officials confirmed on Saturday.
Ndidi, who has been a key figure in Nigeria’s midfield throughout the tournament, sustained a hamstring injury during the quarterfinal victory over Senegal. The Leicester City midfielder was substituted in the second half and has since undergone medical assessments.
“Ndidi will not be available for the semifinal game,” team spokesman Babafemi Raji said. “Our medical team is working on his recovery, but he won’t be fit in time for the match against Morocco.”
The Super Eagles are now expected to rely on Frank Onyeka or Raphael Onyedika to fill the gap left by Ndidi. Head coach José Peseiro expressed confidence in the squad’s depth, noting that injuries are part of tournament football.
“We’ll miss Ndidi’s leadership on the pitch, but we have capable replacements,” Peseiro said. “Our focus remains on getting to the final.”
Nigeria will face Morocco, one of the tournament favorites, in the semifinal on Wednesday. Both teams have been unbeaten so far in the competition.
Ndidi’s absence adds to Nigeria’s growing injury list, with forward Moses Simon also a doubt following a knock in training.
The Super Eagles are seeking their fourth AFCON title, having last won the tournament in 2013.
