Burkina Faso Releases Detained Nigerian Aircraft, Crew After Tuggar’s Diplomatic Visit

The Nigerian government has secured the release of its military aircraft and personnel earlier detained in Burkina Faso, following a diplomatic intervention led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft, which had been grounded for over a week in Burkina Faso under unclear circumstances, was released alongside its crew after a high-level meeting between Minister Tuggar and Burkinabè authorities.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tuggar’s visit was aimed at resolving the diplomatic impasse and ensuring the safety of the detained Nigerian personnel. He held discussions with top Burkinabè officials in Ouagadougou, during which he emphasized the importance of regional cooperation, mutual respect, and the need to avoid misunderstandings that could affect security partnerships in West Africa.

The detained NAF aircraft was reportedly on an official mission when it was held by Burkina Faso’s military authorities, who raised concerns over its operations within their airspace. The details surrounding the reason for the initial detention remain undisclosed, but diplomatic sources indicated it may have involved miscommunication regarding flight clearance.

Following the resolution, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in areas of security and intelligence sharing. Tuggar praised the Burkinabè government for their cooperation and swift action in resolving the issue.

The Nigerian military also assured that all crew members are in good health and have resumed their duties.

The incident highlights the sensitivities of military operations across national borders within the region and the need for enhanced coordination.
