Lawyers representing Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie have written to a Lagos-based hospital following the suspension of a doctor allegedly involved in the mishandling of her late mother’s treatment.
The letter, addressed to the hospital’s management, requests full disclosure regarding the medical care provided to Grace Ifeoma Adichie, who died in 2021. Adichie’s legal team raised concerns over alleged professional negligence and demanded access to her mother’s complete medical records.
The move comes after the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria suspended a senior doctor who oversaw Grace Adichie’s care at the time of her death. The suspension followed an internal probe and a disciplinary review, sources close to the matter said.
Chimamanda Adichie has previously spoken about her mother’s sudden death and hinted at possible medical lapses in a tribute shared after her passing. Her lawyers are pushing for clarity on the events leading to the tragedy and are considering further legal steps depending on the hospital’s response.
Hospital officials have yet to issue a public statement but confirmed receipt of the letter. A spokesperson said the facility is cooperating with the investigation and will provide all necessary documentation as requested.
The case has reignited public debate around accountability in Nigeria’s healthcare system, especially in private hospitals. Patient rights advocates are calling for tighter regulations and enforcement to address alleged medical negligence and restore public trust.
