Court admits more DSS witnesses, evidence in Owo church attack trial

A Federal High Court in Akure on Friday admitted additional witnesses and exhibits presented by the Department of State Services (DSS) in the ongoing trial of suspects linked to the 2022 St. Francis Catholic Church attack in Owo, Ondo State.

The attack, which left over 40 worshippers dead and dozens injured, shocked the nation and drew widespread condemnation. The DSS has charged several individuals in connection with the mass killing, accusing them of terrorism and conspiracy.

During the hearing, the prosecution presented more witnesses and submitted fresh evidence to support its case. Justice B. O. Quadri granted the request to admit the materials after defense counsel raised no objections.

The courtroom was under tight security as DSS operatives escorted the accused persons into the premises. Family members of victims were also present, watching proceedings quietly.

Lead prosecution counsel, O. Akande, told the court the new witnesses would strengthen the case and give deeper insight into the planning and execution of the attack. He said the exhibits included communication records, weapons recovered, and forensic reports.

Defense lawyers maintained that the suspects should still be presumed innocent, stressing their right to a fair trial.

Justice Quadri adjourned the case to a later date for continued hearing.

The Owo church massacre remains one of the deadliest attacks in Nigeria’s recent history, prompting increased security measures across worship centers in the region.
