FG Moves to Calm Markets as U.S. Airstrikes Stir Sovereignty, Economic Concerns

The Federal Government has taken steps to reassure investors and citizens following the tension sparked by U.S. airstrikes targeting terrorist camps in Nigeria. The strikes, while aimed at insurgents, have triggered concerns over national sovereignty, transparency, and possible impacts on the economy.

Presidency sources said the government remains in control and is working closely with security agencies and foreign partners to assess the situation. Officials stressed that Nigeria was not sidelined in the operations, insisting there is ongoing intelligence cooperation between both countries.

However, critics argue that the lack of prior public disclosure and the U.S.’s announcement of “numerous lethal strikes” raise questions about Nigeria’s consent and territorial integrity. Economists have also warned that uncertainty from the strikes could unsettle markets and deter investment if not properly managed.

In response, the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Ministry of Finance have issued statements urging calm, assuring that the nation’s economic fundamentals remain stable. They also emphasized that security remains a top priority for the Tinubu administration.

Meanwhile, opposition voices and civil society groups are demanding a full briefing from the government, calling for accountability and transparency regarding foreign military operations on Nigerian soil.

Security analysts have urged the government to clarify its role in the strikes and engage with the public to ease tensions. As global attention turns to Nigeria’s handling of the fallout, authorities are under pressure to balance international cooperation with the protection of national interests.
