FG Suspends Sachet Alcohol Ban Amid Ongoing Consultations

The Federal Government has suspended all enforcement actions related to the proposed ban on sachet alcohol and 200ml PET bottle products, pending final consultations and policy direction.

The directive was issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) after receiving a formal letter from the House of Representatives Committee on Food and Drugs Administration and Control. The committee, in its letter dated November 13, 2025, urged caution and referenced earlier resolutions of the National Assembly on the matter.

In a statement released by Terrence Kuanum, Special Adviser on Public Affairs to the SGF, the government acknowledged the concerns raised and confirmed that the matter is under review. As a result, no agency, including the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), is authorised to enforce the ban until a final decision is made.

“All enforcement measures are to be put on hold until consultations are concluded and a policy directive is officially issued,” the statement read.

The OSGF also warned that any enforcement carried out without clearance from its office will be considered invalid and should be disregarded by the public.

The suspension comes amid strong opposition from stakeholders, including lawmakers, manufacturers, and small business owners, who argue that the ban could have significant economic implications.

The government assured that it is reviewing all relevant factors — including public health, legislative input, and economic impact — to arrive at a balanced, legal, and informed policy. An official decision will be announced once consultations are complete.
