Five Dead as Lagos Island Fire Continues

The death toll from the ongoing fire outbreak on Lagos Island has risen to five, authorities confirmed on Monday. The inferno, which started several days ago at the popular Dosunmu Market, has continued to burn despite efforts by emergency responders.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) reported that the blaze destroyed several buildings and shops. Officials revealed that the fire spread quickly due to the close clustering of structures and highly flammable goods stored in the area.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire began in a section of the market known for selling electronics and fabrics. Traders and residents struggled to save their goods before firefighters arrived. Some victims were reportedly trapped in nearby residential buildings.

The Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said emergency teams remained on the ground, working to contain the flames. She blamed the persistence of the fire on inaccessible alleys and poor planning within the market.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered a full investigation and promised support for affected victims. He also urged market leaders to prioritize safety measures to prevent future disasters.

Rescue teams have recovered five bodies so far, while several others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment. LASEMA warned that the death toll could rise if the fire isn’t brought under full control soon.

Security has been tightened around the scene as rescue operations continue. Authorities called on residents to cooperate and avoid obstructing emergency responders.
