Generator Fire Damages Residential Building, Destroys Room in Ilorin

A fire outbreak damaged parts of a residential building in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, on Sunday morning, authorities said.

The fire occurred at about 7:10 a.m. at a five-bedroom bungalow located on Obafemi Akere Street, off Basin Road, according to the Kwara State Fire Service.

Firefighters responded to the emergency and were able to contain the blaze before it spread to other parts of the building.

“The magnitude of the fire was significantly reduced through prompt and professional intervention, preventing it from engulfing the entire building and causing more extensive damage,” the fire service said in a statement.

The fire damaged a store and a room situated at the rear section of the property. No casualties were reported.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the blaze originated from a generator that caught fire while in operation without the occupants’ knowledge.

“The flames subsequently spread to a nearby store and a room located at the rear of the building,” the statement said.

Following the incident, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, urged residents to observe safety precautions when operating generators.

He advised members of the public to place generators in well-ventilated areas away from residential buildings and combustible materials, conduct regular maintenance and avoid leaving generators unattended while in use.

Power generators are widely used across Nigeria as an alternative source of electricity because of persistent power supply challenges.
