Government Can’t Fight Insecurity alone – Yoruba Elders

Prominent Yoruba leaders have warned that the worsening insecurity in Nigeria cannot be tackled by the government alone, urging citizens and traditional institutions to play an active role in combating the menace. The Yoruba Council of Elders made this call during a visit to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, at the Arole Oodua Palace in Ile‑Ife, Osun State.

In a statement read by the council’s President, Jibade Oyekan, the elders described insecurity as the most pressing challenge facing the country, saying collective action is necessary to curb attacks, kidnappings and violence. They stressed that the situation should not be left solely in the hands of government. “Going forward, all Nigerians must participate in curbing the menace of insecurity collectively to eradicate it,” the group said.

The elders also urged the government to empower traditional rulers to use their influence in securing communities, noting that local leadership can be critical in early warning systems and community intelligence. They highlighted the importance of community engagement in strengthening security and supporting formal agencies.

Their remarks come as insecurity continues to spread and ravage different parts of the country, with recent attacks, abductions and killings heightening anxiety among citizens. The call for shared responsibility echoes similar appeals for vigilance from other Yoruba leaders, including the Olubadan of Ibadanland, who urged people to remain alert amid rising threats.

The elders also touched on broader socio‑cultural issues, encouraging respect for land ownership traditions in Yorubaland to protect future generations. While insisting on stronger community involvement in security actions, they stressed that national stability depends on cooperation between government, traditional institutions and ordinary citizens.

Their intervention adds to nationwide discussions on how best to improve security and reduce the impact of violent crime across Nigeria.
