Gridlock Fears as Lagos Shuts Eko Bridge on Tuesday for Emergency Repairs

The Lagos State Government has announced the emergency closure of the outbound section of Eko Bridge leading to Lagos Island for safety investigations and repair works.

The state Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, saying the closure will begin on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

Osiyemi said the affected section spans the stretch between Apongbon and Ijora Olopa, while the inward Lagos Island carriageway will remain open to motorists.

He advised motorists affected by the closure to use the Third Mainland Bridge as an alternative route.

“In view of the closure between Apongbon and Ijora Olopa, members of the motoring public are advised to use the Third Mainland Bridge to access their desired destinations,” the statement read.

He added that traffic and security officials would be deployed along alternative routes to manage traffic flow and assist motorists.

Last week, the Federal Government ordered the immediate closure of a section of Eko Bridge as construction work commenced on a new Carter Bridge in Lagos over urgent structural concerns.

Speaking during the project handover ceremony on Lagos Island, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, said underwater assessments revealed critical defects in major bridge infrastructure across the state.

Umahi said investigations conducted since 2013, alongside recent inspections, showed that some supporting piles beneath Carter Bridge and Third Mainland Bridge had shifted.

Eko Bridge is one of the three major bridges linking Lagos Island to the mainland, alongside Carter Bridge and Third Mainland Bridge.
