A civil rights activist and former Secretary of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), Ayo Opadokun, has blamed the rise in killings and violent incidents across Nigeria on individuals opposed to the current administration.
Opadokun made the statement on Monday while addressing journalists in Lagos. He alleged that some political opponents, threatened by the government’s reforms, are sponsoring unrest to destabilize the country.
“These orchestrated acts of violence are not random,” Opadokun said. “They are sponsored by those who lost power and influence and want to make the country ungovernable.”
He noted that while Nigerians are growing increasingly frustrated with insecurity, they must also recognize the political motives behind some of the attacks. He urged citizens not to fall for what he called a deliberate attempt to discredit the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Opadokun, a long-time democracy advocate, praised the government’s efforts in tackling insurgency and restoring order but stressed the need for stronger intelligence gathering and collaboration between security agencies.
He also called on political leaders across party lines to condemn violence and avoid inciting statements that could further divide the nation.
“Those who truly love this country must support peace and stability,” he said.
Security analysts and civil society groups continue to raise concerns over rising insecurity, particularly in northern Nigeria, where banditry and terrorism remain widespread. The government has promised to strengthen security measures, though critics argue progress has been slow.
