Lagos to Strengthen Flood Control Measures in 2026 — Govt

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to implement stronger flood control measures in 2026 to tackle recurring flooding across the state. The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made this known while addressing journalists on the state’s climate adaptation strategy.

Wahab explained that the government has reviewed its current flood response systems and identified areas that need urgent attention. According to him, the 2026 plan will focus on drainage expansion, maintenance, and improved waste management to ensure free water flow during the rainy season.

He said the state will invest more in clearing canals and constructing new channels in flood-prone areas. Community engagement, he noted, will also play a major role in ensuring compliance with environmental laws. “We will not wait for disasters before acting. Our 2026 strategy will be proactive, data-driven, and community-focused,” Wahab said.

The Commissioner also warned residents against blocking drainage systems with refuse, stating that such actions worsen flooding. He encouraged Lagosians to take ownership of their environment and support the government’s efforts.

Wahab added that the government would partner with local councils, private sector stakeholders, and international development agencies to fund and monitor the implementation of the new flood control measures.

He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to protecting lives and property through climate-resilient infrastructure. The commissioner concluded by urging residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with environmental agencies as Lagos moves toward a safer, flood-free future.
