NAFDAC assures Nigerians of safety of Nestlé infant formulae sold locally

Nigeria’s food and drug regulator has assured the public that Nestlé infant formula products sold in the country are safe and not affected by the recent global recall of certain batches of baby formula.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) said in a statement that the recalled products, which include specific batches of SMA and NAN infant formula, were not registered for sale in Nigeria and were never distributed in the local market.

“The Agency wishes to reassure the public, healthcare professionals, parents, guardians, and caregivers that all Nestlé Infant Formulae currently approved for marketing in Nigeria are safe and are not part of the recall,” said NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye.

The global recall, initiated by Nestlé UK, was due to concerns over possible contamination with cereulide, a toxin produced by Bacillus cereus bacteria that can cause nausea and vomiting.

NAFDAC clarified that the SMA infant formula sold in Nigeria is manufactured at Nestlé’s Tuas Factory in Singapore and includes products such as SMA Gold 1, SMA Gold 2, and SMA Gold 3, all of which are duly registered with the agency.

Nestlé Nigeria also confirmed that its locally sold infant formula products are safe and meet both local and international quality standards.

NAFDAC advised consumers to purchase only registered products and report any suspected unregistered or illegal infant formula to the nearest NAFDAC office.
