National grid fails again, with second outage in 5 days

Nigeria’s national power grid has suffered another system failure, plunging parts of the country into darkness just five days after the last outage, raising fresh concerns over the stability of the electricity network.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), which manages the grid, confirmed the incident but did not immediately disclose the cause of the collapse. Power distribution companies reported widespread disruptions across several states, with many customers experiencing sudden loss of supply.

TCN said efforts were underway to restore electricity, though no timeline was given for full recovery. Repeated calls and messages seeking further clarification from the company were not immediately returned.

The latest outage comes amid growing frustration from consumers and businesses over frequent grid collapses, which have continued despite government assurances of improvements in transmission infrastructure.

Energy experts say the recurring failures highlight long-standing challenges in the power sector, including aging equipment, inadequate investment and operational constraints. They warn that without sustained upgrades and better grid management, outages are likely to persist.

The Federal Government has yet to comment on the latest incident, which marks the second national grid failure within a week.
