The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have called for the immediate suspension of new tax laws recently gazetted by the Federal Government. They argued that the laws were rushed, lacked proper consultation, and could worsen the economic hardship facing Nigerians.
Speaking at a joint press briefing in Abuja on Monday, NBA President Yakubu Maikyau (SAN) criticised the process used in introducing the changes. He said the government failed to consult relevant stakeholders before rolling out new tax policies through Executive Orders. According to him, bypassing the legislative process weakens democratic principles.
Atiku also condemned the move. He described the tax law amendments as oppressive and poorly timed. He noted that many citizens and businesses are already struggling with inflation, fuel subsidy removal, and currency devaluation. He warned that adding more taxes without safeguards would further cripple the economy.
Both Atiku and the NBA urged the National Assembly to step in and review the tax changes. They said the review should ensure that the laws reflect fairness, transparency, and the economic realities of Nigerians.
Meanwhile, tax experts and civil society groups have joined the call for a rollback. They argued that the laws favour big corporations and burden small businesses. Many warned that if the laws are not repealed or amended, they could lead to widespread non-compliance and hurt government revenue in the long run.
The Federal Government has yet to issue an official response to the mounting criticisms.
