Nigeria Can Be Fixed, Amaechi Insists Ahead of 2027 Election

Former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi said on Friday that his experience in governance and infrastructure development positions him to solve Nigeria’s challenges ahead of the 2027 general election.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Amaechi said he understands the country’s problems and has the capacity to address them.

“I don’t care who else is running. I’m running because I’m a Nigerian candidate. Because I know the Nigerian problem. And I can solve the Nigerian problem,” he said.

The former Rivers State governor pointed to rail and port projects completed during his tenure as evidence of his record, and said he also took steps to address insecurity while in office.

Amaechi, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, also criticized the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying economic conditions have worsened and many Nigerians are facing hardship.

“Everybody is suffering … everything is skyrocketing,” he said, adding that citizens are struggling with rising transport and living costs.

He further alleged attempts to weaken opposition parties and called for independent operations by institutions such as the Independent National Electoral Commission and the judiciary.

Amaechi also said his party would defeat Tinubu in the 2027 election if allowed on the ballot, accusing the administration of attempting to prevent strong challengers from emerging.

He is among several prominent figures linked to the African Democratic Congress positioning for the 2027 presidential race, alongside Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Nasir El-Rufai and Rauf Aregbesola.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed Jan. 16, 2027, for the presidential election, while party primaries are scheduled for April 23 to May 30, 2026.
