Former Kaduna lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has credited Nigerian security agencies—not US airstrikes—for the relative peace experienced during the 2025 Christmas celebration.
Speaking via his verified X handle, Sani praised Nigerian troops for their efforts in tackling insecurity across the country. He said attributing the calm to foreign military actions undermines the sacrifices of local forces.
His comment followed US President Joe Biden’s statement confirming multiple US airstrikes on terrorist targets in Nigeria, alongside Chad and Cameroon, as part of a broader anti-terror campaign. While some public reactions welcomed the report, Sani maintained that Nigerian security operatives were primarily responsible for the peaceful holiday.
“The peace Nigerians enjoyed this season came from the relentless efforts of our own troops, not from foreign airstrikes. Let’s not discredit our military,” he wrote.
Sani also cautioned against turning the fight against terrorism into a geopolitical competition. He warned that welcoming US strikes while ignoring the role of domestic forces could create division and distraction.
The former senator urged continued investment in Nigeria’s military capacity, intelligence gathering, and regional partnerships. He also stressed the need for stronger governance, economic reforms, and youth engagement as long-term solutions to insecurity.
His remarks have added to the ongoing debate about foreign military involvement in Nigeria’s internal security and the balance between international cooperation and national sovereignty.
