No casualties as Lagos tackles fire near SAPID Terminal in Mile 2

A fire involving chemical and oil drums broke out Saturday at a building behind the SAPID Container Terminal in the Amuwo-Odofin Industrial Estate, Mile 2, Lagos, prompting a multi-agency emergency response, officials said.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, working with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and LRU Fire Services, deployed personnel to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby facilities.

LASEMA Permanent Secretary Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu said preliminary findings showed the fire started in a storage building adjacent to the terminal. He said the presence of highly combustible materials, including chemical and oil drums, caused the fire to escalate rapidly.

“The fire is still raging due to the nature of the materials stored in the affected building,” Oke-Osanyintolu said. “However, our teams and those of partner agencies are working tirelessly to bring the situation under control and prevent further spread to nearby structures.”

He said emergency responders acted swiftly, with the LASEMA Eagle Response Team coordinating firefighting operations alongside other agencies.

“Fortunately, due to the swift and coordinated response of all agencies involved, no lives were lost and no casualties were recorded,” he said.

Emergency responders and state officials remained at the scene, maintaining a safety perimeter and monitoring the situation. Residents and businesses in the industrial estate were urged to remain calm and comply with instructions from emergency personnel as containment efforts continued.

Oke-Osanyintolu said LASEMA and its partners were prioritising the protection of nearby structures while ensuring the safety of responders and the public.
