The House of Representatives has launched an investigation into recent amendments to tax laws, amid growing concerns over their potential impact on revenue collection and economic stability. The probe aims to scrutinize the rationale and implications of the tweaks, ensuring they align with national interests and do not undermine fiscal policies.
Meanwhile, the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded an immediate suspension of the controversial tax law amendments. PDP leaders argue that the changes were hurriedly enacted without adequate stakeholder consultation, risking significant revenue losses and creating loopholes that could be exploited by tax evaders.
In a statement, the PDP emphasized the need for thorough review and public engagement before implementing any tax policy changes. The party accused the ruling administration of using the amendments to favor certain interest groups at the expense of the broader populace.
The House committee overseeing finance and taxation will hold public hearings and summon relevant government officials, including representatives from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the Ministry of Finance, to explain the purpose and expected outcomes of the amendments.
The investigation reflects rising tensions over fiscal governance and the need for transparency in managing Nigeria’s tax system. Lawmakers expressed commitment to ensuring that tax laws promote fairness, boost compliance, and enhance government revenue to fund essential services.
As the probe unfolds, both lawmakers and opposition parties are watching closely, underscoring the critical role of tax policy in Nigeria’s economic recovery and development efforts.
