Russia Launches Massive Missile and Drone Barrage on Ukraine, Killing at Least Four

Russia launched a massive overnight missile and drone attack on Ukraine, killing at least four people and striking multiple cities, Ukrainian authorities said Sunday.

The assault included about 600 drones and 90 missiles, according to Ukraine’s air force, which said it intercepted 549 drones and 55 missiles.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said two people were killed in the capital and dozens were injured. Authorities in the surrounding Kyiv region reported two additional deaths.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian forces used a nuclear-capable hypersonic Oreshnik missile during the barrage and struck civilian infrastructure.

“Three Russian missiles against a water supply facility, a market burnt down, dozens of residential buildings damaged, several ordinary schools,” Zelenskyy said on Telegram. “They are genuinely deranged.”

Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed the use of the Oreshnik missile, saying the strikes were in response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian-controlled territory.

The ministry said it also used Iskander ballistic missiles, Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and Tsirkon cruise missiles in what it described as a “massive strike.”

Air raid alerts sounded across Kyiv overnight as explosions shook the capital. Residents took shelter in metro stations while officials warned of fires and damage across all districts.

Ukrainian authorities said additional casualties were reported in the Kharkiv, Cherkasy and Dnipropetrovsk regions.

Russia said the attack followed a Ukrainian drone strike on Starobilsk in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine, which Moscow said killed at least 18 people in a dormitory building. Ukraine denied targeting civilians, saying it struck a military-related site.

The escalation comes as both sides intensify long-range strikes amid a prolonged war that began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

U.S.-led diplomatic efforts to end the conflict have slowed in recent months, with attention shifting to other global crises.
