Shettima’s alma mater in Bad Condition, Students and Teachers Complain

Students and staff of Government Secondary School, Maiduguri — the alma mater of Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima — have raised serious concerns over the deteriorating condition of their learning environment, describing the situation as disheartening and damaging to education standards.

Over the years, the school’s infrastructure has continued to crumble, with classrooms, toilets, and learning facilities showing visible sof neglect. Teachers have reported peeling roofs, cracked walls, broken doors, and leaking roofs that make the school environment unsafe and unconducive for effective teaching and learning. Students, too, expressed frustration over the lack of basic amenities, including adequate seating, electricity, and learning materials.

Speaking with journalists on campus, several students lamented that their school, once known for academic excellence, now resembles a dilapidated structure in urgent need of rehabilitation. “We are doing our best despite these challenges,” one student said, “but it’s hard to focus when the class roof leaks every time it rains.”

Staff members have echoed these concerns, urging government officials at all levels to intervene and restore the school to its former glory. “Our teaching efforts are continually undermined by the state of these facilities,” a teacher lamented. “We need urgent repairs and support to deliver quality education.”

Parents of the students also voiced their disappointment, noting that the poor condition of the school reflects neglect of public education. They called on both state and federal authorities, including notable alumni such as the Vice President, to prioritize the rehabilitation of the institution.

As the outcry grows louder, stakeholders are hopeful that attention will finally be turned to the school’s worsening state before the decay further compromises students’ futures.
