The Nigerian Army has arrested a blogger and social media influencer, Justice Chidiebere popularly known as Justice Crack, over allegations of inciting soldiers and spreading misleading information online.
In a statement issued Saturday, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele said the arrest followed complaints from soldiers about feeding and welfare concerns that were shared on social media by the influencer.
The Army said the case is under investigation for an alleged breach of its social media policy.
According to the statement, preliminary findings suggest that soldiers communicated with Chidiebere on various issues, during which he allegedly encouraged discontent within the ranks.
“Preliminary reports reveal that the soldiers discussed a wide range of issues with Justice Chidiebere, who appeared to be inciting discontent within the system,” the statement said.
The Army added that one of the exchanges allegedly bordered on subversion, raising concerns about discipline and national security.
“It is important to note that a situation where civilians influence vulnerable personnel toward acts of subversion has far-reaching implications for discipline and national security,” the statement said.
Chidiebere was arrested alongside the soldiers involved, the Army said. While the soldiers remain in military custody, the influencer has been handed over to civil authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Army reiterated its commitment to the rule of law and said it would continue to work with relevant agencies to ensure justice.
“We will continue to act within the ambits of the law in safeguarding our sovereignty,” the statement added.
