Tinubu Denies Claims of Religious Genocide in Nigeria

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dismissed claims of genocide against Christians or Muslims in Nigeria, saying such allegations do not reflect the true situation in the country.

Speaking at a national security meeting in Abuja, Tinubu acknowledged that Nigeria faces serious security challenges, including clashes between communities, banditry, and extremist attacks. However, he emphasized that the crises are the result of criminality and conflict over resources, not a targeted campaign to exterminate any religious group.

“We must be careful with words like ‘genocide,’” Tinubu said. “What we are witnessing are violent acts by criminals and armed groups, but not a deliberate attempt by the government or any community to wipe out Christians or Muslims. Nigeria remains a secular nation where people of all faiths live side by side.”

Tinubu also reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting every Nigerian, regardless of religion or ethnicity. He stressed that the security architecture is being strengthened and that collaboration between the military, police, and local communities is key to tackling insecurity.

The president urged Nigerians and international observers to focus on constructive dialogue and practical solutions to the country’s security problems rather than inflaming tensions with terms that could deepen divisions.

Tinubu highlighted several ongoing initiatives aimed at improving safety across the country, including community policing programmes and efforts to improve intelligence sharing.

In closing, he appealed for unity and calm, emphasizing that peace is essential for economic growth and national development. “We must work together,” he said, “to ensure that Nigeria’s diversity remains a source of strength, not division.”
