Tinubu postpones Ogun trip for Plateau visit as security tightens after deadly attacks

President Bola Tinubu has postponed a planned visit to Ogun state to travel instead to Plateau state following deadly attacks that left at least 27 people dead, officials said Wednesday.

Tinubu is expected to visit Jos on Thursday to commiserate with victims and assess the security situation after violence in the Angwan Rukuba area of Jos North.

The decision followed a meeting with Plateau Gov. Caleb Mutfwang at the presidential villa in Abuja, where the governor briefed him on the latest developments.

The presidency said the visit is part of a broader four-state trip that will also include Lagos, Ogun and Bayelsa states.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has ordered the deployment of additional mobile police units and tactical teams to Plateau to restore order and prevent further violence.

Police said the deputy inspector general in charge of operations has also been deployed to coordinate security efforts on the ground.

Mutfwang told reporters that security forces have yet to arrest those responsible for the attacks and said their identities and motives remain unclear.

“In a crisis of this nature, you can’t reduce it to one reason,” he said, describing the violence as criminal and terror-related.

Tension remained high in parts of Jos despite a partial relaxation of a curfew imposed after the attacks. Authorities said hoodlums attacked motorists and passersby in some areas, forcing businesses, banks and schools to shut.

The University of Jos ordered the evacuation of students from hostels, citing safety concerns after unrest spread near campus areas.

The National Youth Service Corps also suspended biometric clearance activities across Plateau state due to the security situation.

Local authorities imposed additional curfews in some areas, including Mangu, where movement is now restricted overnight.

Security agencies said they are intensifying patrols and intelligence operations, while urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with authorities.

Tinubu earlier condemned the attacks as “barbaric and cowardly,” vowing that those responsible would be brought to justice.
