Tinubu, Shettima to Spend ₦9.3bn on Travel and Food in 2026 Budget

President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima are set to spend a combined ₦9.3 billion on travel and food in the 2026 fiscal year, according to budget documents submitted to the National Assembly.

The proposal allocates ₦7.01 billion for Tinubu’s local and international travel, with ₦873.9 million earmarked for domestic trips and ₦6.14 billion for foreign travel. An additional ₦431.6 million is set aside for food, catering materials, and refreshments.

Vice President Shettima is expected to spend ₦1.73 billion on travel—₦417.5 million for local trips and ₦1.31 billion for international travel—alongside ₦186 million for food and related expenses.

These allocations are part of the ₦58.18 trillion national budget presented by Tinubu on December 19, 2025. The budget also includes ₦3.2 trillion for defense, ₦2.3 trillion for education, ₦2.1 trillion for health and social welfare, and ₦1.4 trillion for agriculture and food security.

Other presidential expenditures include ₦65.8 million for honorariums and sitting allowances, ₦895 million for library books and equipment, ₦179 million for vehicle purchases, and ₦778.6 million for office furniture and fittings.

The proposed spending has sparked public debate amid Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges, with critics questioning the necessity of such high allocations for travel and hospitality.

The National Assembly is currently reviewing the budget proposal, with deliberations expected to continue in the coming weeks.
