President Bola Tinubu will deliver a joint address to Nigeria’s National Assembly on June 12 as part of activities marking the country’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary, officials said Tuesday.
The announcement was made during the inauguration of an inter-ministerial committee tasked with organizing the national celebration.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume inaugurated the committee at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja, describing the presidential address as a key highlight of the commemoration.
Akume said Democracy Day remains a moment for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices of pro-democracy activists who fought for the restoration of civilian rule, particularly those involved in the June 12, 1993, election crisis. He paid tribute to the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, widely regarded as a symbol of Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement.
He said the anniversary also provides an opportunity for the government to highlight efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and promote national development amid economic challenges.
Akume urged members of the committee to begin work immediately, noting that preparations must be completed within 10 days.
Activities for the commemoration will begin June 4 with a world press briefing, followed by special Muslim prayers on June 5 and an interdenominational church service on June 7. A public lecture is scheduled for June 9, while youth and women-focused events will hold June 10.
President Tinubu is also expected to deliver a nationwide broadcast on June 12. The celebration will conclude with a gala night later that day.
