Tragedy Strikes LAUTECH: Six Nursing Students Killed in Road Accident

The management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology said six nursing students died Sunday in a road crash on the Ilorin–Ogbomoso Road.

In a statement Feb. 24, signed by Registrar Olayinka Balogun, the university described the deaths as “tragic” and “a monumental loss” to the campus community.

The students, all in their final year of the Open and Distance Learning Nursing program, were traveling from Suleja, Niger State, to the university for final exams when the accident occurred at Otte, Kwara State.

The deceased were identified as Shehu Nana Firdawsi Hamza, Idris Jamila, Abdulraheem Maimunah Hamza, Blessing Kevwe, Owoicho Elizabeth and Aroke Ozavize Victoria.

“With a heavy heart, the management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology announces the tragic loss of six of our cherished nursing students who were involved in a ghastly motor accident on Feb. 22,” the statement read.

Balogun said the incident has left the academic community in mourning. “The students were not only pursuing their educational dreams with determination and resilience, but also represented the spirit of hope and progress that defines our institution,” the statement said.

The university extended condolences to the families of the deceased and urged the public to pray for the repose of their souls. “We extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of the deceased. The university stands in solidarity with them during this time of immeasurable grief,” the statement added.

The crash marks the second fatal accident involving final-year students in Kwara State within a month. On Feb. 5, Kwara State University confirmed the death of 400-level student Idris Agboluaje in an auto crash in the Malete area.

Kikelomo Sallee, registrar at Kwara State University, said the student was on his way to campus for an examination when the accident occurred.
