A truck driver has crushed a commercial motorcycle rider, popularly known as an okada rider, and his passenger to death in Nigeria’s largest city, police said Thursday.
The crash occurred along a busy road in Lagos when the truck reportedly lost control and ran over the motorcycle, killing both occupants instantly, witnesses said. The identities of the victims were not immediately released.
Police said the truck driver was arrested at the scene and is being questioned as part of an ongoing investigation. Authorities are also examining whether speeding, mechanical failure or reckless driving caused the accident.
Road accidents involving trucks and motorcycles are common in Lagos, where heavy traffic, poor road conditions and widespread use of commercial motorcycles contribute to frequent fatalities.
Officials urged motorists to drive cautiously and obey traffic regulations to reduce the rising number of road crashes in the city.
