UNIJOS Students Protest Weeklong Power Outage, Demand Immediate Restoration

Students of the University of Jos on Tuesday staged a protest over a weeklong power outage affecting hostels on campus.

The students said they have been without electricity for about seven days, a situation they described as unbearable and disruptive to their academic activities and daily living.

One student, Felix Bala, said the blackout had made life difficult since the start of the current academic session.

“Since our resumption, we have not had power in our hostels,” Bala said. “We were told that power was cut off. We demand the immediate restoration of electricity.”

The protesting students said repeated complaints to university authorities had not produced any concrete solution.

They warned that the protest would continue until their demands for restored electricity were met.

Bala said the outage also affected water supply, as pumping machines depend on electricity. He said students had gone several days without running water, leaving sanitation conditions poor in the hostels.

Another student, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said attempts by some off-campus students to persuade protesters to end the blockade were unsuccessful.

As of the time of filing this report, the Students’ Union Government president, Senator Younglan Talyoung, could not be reached for comment.

The Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Chris Piwuna, was also not immediately available for comment as calls to his phone went unanswered.
