Vice President Shettima flags off nationwide agricultural settlements project

The Federal Government has launched a large-scale agricultural settlements initiative aimed at boosting food production and tackling hunger across Nigeria.

Vice President Kashim Shettima flagged off the project in Kebbi State, marking the start of the first phase of the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates programme focused on agriculture. The project is designed to create clusters of farms, agro-processing zones, and housing units in rural communities.

According to officials, each settlement will include irrigated farmlands, residential areas, clinics, schools, and markets to support farmers and improve rural livelihoods.

Shettima said the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s agenda to ensure food security and reduce dependence on food imports. “This project is not just about farming; it’s about building sustainable communities and creating jobs,” he said.

The Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with state governments, will oversee the development of the settlements. Local farmers and youths are expected to be key beneficiaries.

The Federal Government plans to replicate the model across all six geopolitical zones. Officials say the settlements will focus on key crops including rice, maize, cassava, and vegetables, depending on regional soil and climate conditions.

Analysts welcomed the move but stressed the need for proper funding, transparency, and long-term planning. Some farmer groups urged the government to ensure access to affordable inputs and modern equipment.

The agricultural settlements project comes as Nigeria faces rising food inflation and insecurity challenges affecting rural farming communities.
