Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has explained why he will not back President Bola Tinubu’s re‑election bid in 2027.
Makinde spoke during a media forum in Ibadan on Saturday, where he outlined his reasons for distancing himself from what he described as “the current political alignment.”
He said his decision stems from differences in leadership style, governance priorities and political philosophy. “I believe in inclusive leadership that listens to all voices,” Makinde said. “I have serious concerns about how some policies were implemented and the impact they have had on ordinary Nigerians.”
The governor also pointed to economic hardship facing many citizens. He stated that the current administration’s approach to managing inflation, unemployment and living costs has not yielded the desired relief at the grassroots.
Makinde noted that his focus remains on advancing policies that directly improve lives in Oyo State. He added that his political alignment must reflect the interests of his constituents, not just party loyalty.
“I must be true to the people who elected me,” he said. “My first duty is to deliver results at home. That shapes my choice in 2027.”
The governor called for unity among political leaders to prioritise national development. He urged fellow politicians to build bridges and work together on solutions that address poverty, insecurity and infrastructure deficits.
Makinde, a former member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), confirmed he will continue engaging stakeholders on a platform that best represents his vision for Nigeria’s future. He insisted that his position does not amount to a personal attack but reflects a broader concern for the nation’s direction.
His comments add momentum to ongoing debates about alliances and leadership choices ahead of the 2027 general elections.
