The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised the Federal Government’s approach to tax implementation, saying it burdens the poor while failing to expand the economic base. Speaking during a media chat in Lagos on Monday, Obi said the new tax measures reflect insensitivity to citizens’ struggles.
He argued that Nigeria cannot generate revenue by taxing poverty, especially in a country where inflation and unemployment continue to rise. “You don’t tax people into prosperity. You support production, stimulate economic activity, and then you tax income, not poverty,” he said.
Obi urged the government to prioritise policies that drive investment and local production instead of leaning heavily on consumption taxes. According to him, raising taxes without a corresponding increase in productivity or social safety nets will only deepen hardship.
The former Anambra State governor also called for a clearer, more transparent tax framework that considers the country’s socio-economic realities. He said government must lead with example by cutting waste, improving public services, and building trust among citizens.
Meanwhile, reactions have continued to trail the commencement of new tax laws nationwide. Several civil society groups and student unions have voiced similar concerns, warning that the implementation could spark protests.
Obi called on lawmakers to revisit the laws and adopt a more inclusive process. “Let us build a country that works for all, not one that squeezes the weakest,” he said.
