Fubara, Wike renew political fight for the soul of Rivers

The political rivalry between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, has intensified as both leaders vie for control ahead of the 2027 elections.

Wike’s recent “thank you” visits to various local government areas, including Obio/Akpor, Emohua, Ikwerre, and Port Harcourt City, have been interpreted as strategic moves to reassert his influence. During these tours, he emphasized correcting the “mistakes of 2023” and cautioned that political power should not be taken for granted. Observers view these actions as a direct challenge to Fubara’s authority.

In response, Governor Fubara has been consolidating his political base. His recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has garnered support from key national figures. APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda recognized Fubara as the party leader in Rivers State, aligning with the party’s tradition of granting sitting governors control over state party structures.

The ongoing power tussle has raised concerns about the state’s political stability. Analysts warn that the escalating conflict could hinder governance and development efforts in Rivers State. As the 2027 elections approach, the central question remains: who will ultimately command the political landscape of Rivers State.
