Rivers in turmoil: APC leaders step in as Fubara faces impeachment threat

The political crisis in Rivers State has increased as the State House of Assembly initiated fresh impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara. This move has prompted intervention from All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders, who are urging for peace and adherence to constitutional processes.

On Monday, 24 out of 32 lawmakers supported a motion to serve an impeachment notice on Governor Fubara, citing alleged gross misconduct. The Assembly also targeted the State Commissioner for Finance, Isaac Kamalu Odum, accusing him of financial impropriety.

The impeachment proceedings follow escalating tensions between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, now Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike. The rift intensified after the removal of Assembly Leader Edison Ehie, a known Wike loyalist, and the subsequent fire that gutted the Assembly complex.

Governor Fubara has now questioned his accusers and asked them to publicly reveal the offenses warranting his calls for impeachment. He assured Rivers residents of his undying commitment to delivering democratic dividends and maintaining stability in the state.

Reacting to the immediate turn of events, APC leaders have raised a call for restraint and dialogue. They insist on the importance of adhering to democratic principles and avoiding any form of action that could bring about a state of instability to Rivers as a whole . Elder statesman Pa Edwin Clark also advised against unconstitutional tactics to remove the governor, He also emphasized on the impending doom the Niger Delta region and the national economy could face if his warnings aren’t heeded .

As the situation evolves, stakeholders continue to advocate for peaceful resolution and compliance to the rule of law to preserve and maintain political stability in the state .
