The Ijaw National Congress on Sunday said residents of Rivers State are opposed to efforts to impeach Gov. Siminalayi Fubara warning lawmakers aligned with former governor Nyesom Wike to abandon the plan.
The Rivers State Elders and Leaders Council also condemned the Martin Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly over impeachment proceedings against Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
Both groups said the move would fail and accused the lawmakers of pursuing personal interests under the guise of constitutional procedure.
The INC described the impeachment push as an exercise in futility and criticized legislators—particularly those of Ijaw extraction—who have publicly backed the process despite Fubara’s Ijaw background.
INC President Benjamin Okaba said the actions of some Assembly members amounted to a betrayal.
“I’m very positive that at the end of the day it will all turn out to be a futile exercise,” Okaba said in a telephone interview. “There is public outcry within and outside Rivers State because this is a clear case of vendetta using the instrumentality of impeachment. It is not about democracy or development, but personal interest above the interest of the state.”
