Bello to Politicians: Unite, Stay Patient, Serve the People

Former Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello has urged political aspirants to embrace unity, patience and legacy-driven leadership as political activities intensify ahead of future elections.

Bello gave the advice while receiving members of the Kogi State House of Assembly, according to a statement issued Monday in Lokoja by his media office and signed by its director, Michael Ohiare.

The meeting comes amid increasing consultations and political realignments in Kogi State following the inauguration of Gov. Ahmed Usman Ododo, Bello’s successor and ally, who won the 2023 governorship election.

Bello, who served from 2016 to 2024 and remains influential within the ruling All Progressives Congress, congratulated aspirants who had obtained expression of interest and nomination forms. He said political positions are temporary, while legacy and impact endure.

He noted that although many individuals are qualified to serve, political realities often require compromise and patience. He also urged aspirants to recognize the sacrifices of others who stepped aside for them and to respect such gestures.

Bello cautioned that no aspirant should pay money to secure endorsement, directing anyone who had been asked to do so to demand a refund.

He further advised aspirants to return to their constituencies to reconcile with stakeholders, emphasizing unity, inclusiveness and grassroots engagement as critical to electoral success. He expressed confidence in their chances, adding that success should be sustained through dedication and service.

Bello said he hopes to be remembered as a “promise keeper,” someone who keeps his word except in circumstances beyond his control.

Earlier, Speaker Umar Aliyu said the Assembly had sustained the unity and cooperation established during Bello’s administration under the current government.

He commended Bello for supporting the legislature and said that support contributed to its effectiveness. He also reaffirmed the Assembly’s loyalty to Bello and the Ododo administration, pledging continued backing for government policies and development efforts.

Aliyu added that the Assembly, which had 25 members during Bello’s tenure, has expanded to 36 seats following the recognition of previously suppressed constituencies ahead of the next elections.
