2027 Race Opens Up as Court Affirms Jonathan’s Eligibility for Presidency

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday dismissed a suit challenging former President Goodluck Jonathan’s eligibility to contest the 2027 presidential election, effectively clearing him to run.

Justice Peter Lifu, in his judgment, upheld a N20 million fine imposed on the plaintiff’s lawyer, Johnmary Jideobi, and also awarded an additional N1 million fine against the plaintiff in favour of the Attorney-General of the Federation.

The judge held that the lawyer lacked legal standing to file the case because he did not suffer any personal injury arising from Jonathan’s alleged intention to contest the election.

He noted that both a Federal High Court in Yenagoa and the Court of Appeal had previously ruled that Jonathan is eligible to run, adding that he was bound by those appellate decisions.

Justice Lifu described the suit as an “abuse of court process” and dismissed it as frivolous.
