Coastal Road Raid: Lagos Moves to Prosecute 75 Suspects

The Lagos State Government said Thursday it will prosecute 75 suspected miscreants arrested during a clean-up operation along the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wsaid the arrests were made late Wednesday during intensified enforcement activities along the corridor.

According to Wahab, 68 males and seven females were detained during a raid conducted at about 10 p.m. by operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Task Force. Substances suspected to be illicit drugs were recovered at the scene, he said.

“As part of the ongoing clean-up and enforcement drive along the Coastal Road, operatives carried out a late-night raid targeting identified black spots in the area,” Wahab said in a statement.

He said one task force officer, Inspector Omosanjo Mohamed, was attacked during the operation and sustained a serious head injury. The officer is receiving medical treatment.

Wahab warned that attacks on law enforcement officers would not be tolerated and said those arrested would face prosecution.

The state government said the suspects would be charged in court after investigations, in line with state laws covering environmental offenses, public nuisance, drug-related crimes and assault.

Wahab said the operation is part of broader efforts to restore order along the coastal corridor, where motorists and residents have reported incidents of harassment and insecurity, particularly in sections under construction and expansion.

“We remain resolute in restoring order, protecting public spaces, and ensuring that the Coastal Road and other parts of Lagos are safe and secure for all law-abiding residents,” he said.

Officials said the raid aligns with the state’s zero-tolerance policy on street crime and environmental violations aimed at maintaining safety and economic stability.
